Fourteen Knoxville-area companies made the 2014 Inc. 5000 ranking of the fastest growing private companies in the country.

The list released this week ranks companies based on percentage revenue growth for the most recent three years. Knoxville contractor Tillman Cos. — No. 461 on the national list — was the highest ranked local firm and the 6th fastest-growing company in Tennessee. It also ranked 20th among top construction firms.

It’s the second consecutive year on the list for the firm, which had $5.2 million in revenue last year and three-year growth of more than 1,033 percent.

“We are about 8 percent above where we were this time last year. We plan to slow down a bit as far as growth, but look to continue expanding out of East Tennessee into other states. Our long-term plan is to take our consulting business international, within the next three to five years,” said Allen Tillman, the firm’s founder. Preliminary research on the international expansion is underway with help from Tillman’s son, Travis, and plans are to hire three to five employees per year to support current growth.

“One of the things I’m very proud of is we did all this without any seed money, all on our own,” Tillman said.

The firm recently served as general contractor on the renovation of the Complete Family Care medical office in the former Litton’s on Downtown West and just finished a custom home in Blaine. The company is currently adding foundation and other interior alterations for local manufacturer Rock-Tenn to install a printing press, according to permits filed with the city of Knoxville. The firm expects the project to cost about $750,000. It also has about 30 other projects on tap and expects that to grow, citing an increased volume of calls this month.

Three area companies made the list for the first time: IMEG in Sevierville, which was also a top ranked travel and hospitality company; Knoxville-based staffing firm AtWork Group; and Weigel’s convenience store chain based in Powell.

All area companies on this year’s Inc. 5000, their industry, headquarters and 2013 revenue:
